Pulelehua

The pen-and-watercolor sketches for a Wings of Fire fan continent I was working on, uhh...a year ago today, apparently. Huh.

I haven't thought about this setting for a while, so we'll see if I remember any of the details. Rambling under the cut.

Pulelehua was based on Hawaii, and named for one of the state's two native butterflies.  Pulelehua is inhabited by descendants of Pyrrhia's tribes who have evolved to survive on the volcanic islands that make up the nation. Currently, it is inhabited by five tribes, although they are culturally distinct from Pyrrhia and Pantala, and don't use the -Wing suffix.

Pulelehuan SkyWings are smaller than the standard ones, with distinctive red-and-black coloration that helps them blend into the lava fields where they dwell. They've evolved to be resistant to heat.

SandWings are the least numerous tribe in the islands, and they've evolved to live and hunt on black-sand beaches. They also have extra horns, apparently.

There are actually two distinct types of SeaWing: lighter-colored reef SeaWings, which have extra whiskers and fins and tend to be very showy-looking, and darker, larger deep SeaWings, which live in the depths of the ocean and have numerous extra points of bioluminescence.

The fifth tribe is a MudWing/RainWing hybrid species that live in the jungles. They're the least developed.

  1. Mud/Rain hybrid...? Haven't seen that one before. Then again, I don't actively participate in the fandom, so.
