The Falconry Chronicles: Page 16

16 pages in my first year of drawing comics isn't bad, especially considering I moved and injured my hand in that time. We'll be back in January, assuming nothing drastic happens. (It's 2020, I'm not ruling anything out.)

Peril

Peril Wings of Fire
New and improved Peril design. I think I've finally found a balance I like between "copper" and "on fire"!

...Y'know, I bet Peril glows in the dark.

and everything burned

but new life rose again from the ashes.

Another, more precise Falchron size chart, ft. the main duo, Fleck's roommate, and several characters who haven't shown up yet.

The Falconry Chronicles: Page 14

Boy has it been a while, but we are back!

I'm really sorry it took so long--moving absolutely trashed my ability to keep a schedule, apparently--but I did get a lot of behind-the-scenes work done in the interim. There's a really solid outline now, and I did a lot of design work on the town and the background characters who live in it. And look, I learned to draw smoke better, apparently!

I can't promise we'll go back to a consistent schedule, but I will try to take less than three months on the next page. :P

White Wolf

Huh, it's been a while since I drew Marvel. This is Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier a.k.a. White Wolf, in my idea of what an MCU-ified version of the comics-verse White Wolf costume might look like.

I found some sketches I did back in 2018 and figured, I still really love this character, and I'm feeling confident about drawing humans lately, so I might as well take a shot at it.

A cyborg pony. This guy's not Falchron, just a fun experiment, but I really like how it turned out.

other falchron-adjacent things i've drawn recently

Confetti, Feathering's town mage, plus an experiment with drawing Starlight Glimmer's time portal.

Princess Flurry Heart, canonicl daughter of Princess Cadence and Shining Armor, in a hypothetical future where she's ruler of Equestria. This series does feature time travel, after all....

Minor character Chef Buttercream, actually a changeling named Spiracle. She uses her shapeshifting powers to taste-test the foods she makes for a wide range of species. Her restaurant is one of the best places in Equestria to get non-pony foods. Idk if she'll ever actually show up; she's mostly just set dressing. I like her, though.

More human!Falc

At the request of my little sister, Falc in formalwear with her elder sister, the Magician. Falc is on the right in purple.

The character of the Magician came from my little sister and worked so well that she got adopted into the mythos. Hopefully I can find a place to work her into the story, 'cause she's cool.

...Three drawings I actually like of humanoids in two days? How did this happen?

Some human!Falconress

Wearing the outfit I designed for her third form, back when I was eleven and had plans for like five seasons of this.

Snowfall

Queen Snowfall

Since the next WoF book's cover has been revealed, and this terrible lady has a canon design now. I can't wait for her perspective.

And a bonus, since I liked how her body turned out and was disappointed to have to cover it up:

S P O O K Y T I M E

Hazel and Shuri welcome you to October.

...I'm probably not going to do the full Inktober challenge this year. I'd like to focus on my comic, and see if I can get some work done on that. I'll probably do a few Inktober drawings--a handful of the AI prompts have really caught my eye--but certainly not all 31.

Edit: oh hey, this is the 200th post on this blog!

Operastalker pt3

(pt1 pt2)

Some masquerade costumes and some setting practice.

Clockwise from top left: Whiteout, the Phantom, Listener, Clearsight, Foeslayer, Arctic

Clearsight/Christine in the opera house auditorium

A handful of setting studies: the underground lake (ft. Fathom and Darkstalker), the opera house's Grand Staircase (ft. Whiteout), and the rooftop (ft. Listener and Clearsight).

Falchron size chart

Created for my own personal reference, but it seemed worth sharing. Featuring the main cast (including Hephaesta, who hasn't shown up yet) plus a Dalek, Princess Celestia, and potential side character Wulfric Thomas.

Actual pages are still coming, just slowly.

...Celestia's proportions are confusing.

Some WoF sketches

In case you can't read my handwriting: that's Winter, Queen Glacier, Queen Diamond, Arctic, Snowfox, Snowflake, my OC Niveous (subtitled "peasant"), and Cirrus.

Various IceWing designs, showing the tribe's range of colors.

My OCs: Mourning Cloak the SilkWing assassin and Perdita, his adopted daughter.

And finally, this WIP animation of a SilkWing.

Hey, sorry Falchron's so late. I'm still working on it, but I'm tackling some problems on the writing side of things that need to be worked out before I can continue drawing, and I rarely have access to a computer with a keyboard. That, in addition to sleep issues and stress-related art block, means it could be a while before there's any real sceduling consistency.

In the meantime, since these things look wrong without an image, have this setting concept sketch I did a while back

Darkstalker

What I was supposed to be drawing: Falchron
What I drew: this

Just regular Darkstalker this time, not the Phantom version

Operastalker pt2

Alright, so now that I've thought about this for two months straight and read the original novel of Phantom of the Opera, there has been some shuffling of roles.

Specifically, I was wrong about Raoul being Fathom. That role is much better filled by Clearsight's school friend Listener. (Still not romantic, though.) *

FATHOM, displaced from the role of Vicomte and probably not ever right for it in the first place, now shares with Indigo the role of the Persian, book Erik's old friend who gets cut from nearly every adaptation of PotO despite being the coolest character in the book.

Meanwhile, we also have here the character who was easiest to cast--Carlotta and Allknowing are just straight up the same character: the skilled, respected professional who resents being replaced by the antivillain's young, talented crush.

Also featured are Silverclaws (based on La Sorelli from PotO-the-book, who has no equivalent in either the musical or WoF) and Daddy Daaé (who just doesn't get a name, I guess, because neither Tui Sutherland nor Gaston Leroux thought he needed one).

*Brown-tabby-stripes Listener comes from user Oleandy on DeviantArt, who I'm not going to link to because Mom doesn't want my little siblings (who follow this blog) running around on DeviantArt.

I drew this months ago and then completely forgot about it

Ibex of the SkyWings

I've been drawing a lot of Operastalker lately, so I figured it might be nice to shake things up and draw a WoF tribe other than SeaWings or NightWings. Featuring my favorite SkyWing design I've done and the dragon it goes to, who I should really change the personality of because he is much too obnoxious to look that cool.

The Falconry Chronicles: Page 13

*Insert obligatory coronavirus joke*

And we are back in business, baby! Hopefully on the alternate Fridays schedule again, but my wrist still hurts and I've gotta revise some layouts before I can draw the next page, so we'll see.

Fun fact: I nearly managed to post this without the first speech bubble. I have no idea how.

The next Falconry Chronicles page is coming, but it's gonna be a few days late. I'm still readjusting to schedules, and I have to be a bit more cautious than usual because my wrist has started hurting.

In the meantime, have this messy sketch:

The Princess of Decay

An MLP OC I came up with last month: the alicorn in charge of maintaining the cycle of death and regrowth in the face of a society that not only controls its entire ecosystem, but also possesses magic powerful enough to manipulate time.

She isn't part of the governmental structure of Equestria, although she is an ally to the royal family, and prefers to work in solitude much of the time. Her duties include insuring that wildfires happen often enough to maintain a healthy ecosystem, making sure things grow back properly after natural disasters, keeping ponies from figuring out immortality spells, and repeatedly explaining that yes, carnivores are necessary.

She doesn't have a name yet because there are no synonyms for "decay" with positive connotations. I'd like to have her show up in Falchron at some point.
Hela, Garmr, Fenrir, Narfi

A sketch of Hela, the Norse goddess of death, and all the canines associated with her: Garmr, her guard dog; Fenrisulfr, her brother; and Narfi, her half-brother. Wow, it's been a while since I drew Norse myth characters, hasn't it?

(I've always pictured Garmr as a Rottweiler for some reason. Don't ask why.)

In other news: we are done with moving out now, which means I'll have time to draw Falchron again! I'll try to get a page out next Friday, although no promises--I haven't even figured out sleeping at a consistent time yet, so it's possible I won't be able to get into the swing of doing scheduled, non-packing things right away. And I still need to do layouts for the next few pages, and probably re-familiarize myself with the style after not drawing ponies for a few weeks.

(Seriously on the sleep thing. Since we left I've gone to bed at 1pm (after packing all night and driving all morning), 6pm,  and now it's looking like it's gonna be 4am. I think I drove myself to exhaustion so many days in a row that my body hardly even registers regular everyday tiredness anymore.)

One last Falchron filler sketch--this time the Falconress as a more realistically proportioned pony. (I hesitate to say she's wholly realistic, as she is still bright red with wings.)

Happy Friday! Have some more Falconry Chronicles filler content. Specifically a rough sketch of the Falconress doing some falconry.

Prince Albatross

Albatross Wings of Fire

An Albatross design--for the Operastalker universe, technically, but it works as a general-purpose one too.

The Falconress and her TARDIS

Since I posted that last page and my brain immediately went, "What? No, you're not allowed to stop drawing these characters." Which is probably a good sign for this project's long-term success.

Bonus: a sketch of a very wet Fleck

The Falconry Chronicles: Page 12

For those of you who don't know, since I think I have some siblings who are less familiar with Doctor Who lore than I am, Gallifrey's sky is orange. (Or it is when the writers aren't cowards)

IMPORTANT SCHEDULE-RELATED UPDATE: I'm moving, apparently! Which is great news, but it means that for the rest of the month I'm not going to have a lot of time for drawing, and especially not for the long, focused drawing sessions that these comic pages require. And since I never did manage to rebuild my backlog, that means I won't be able to update for the rest of the month. Probably don't expect a new page until July 7th, at the earliest.

EDIT: July 10th, actually. The 7th is a Tuesday and I have no idea why I picked that date.
